Snapchat – Spectacles video recording, available later this year
Snapchat announced last week that it was it launching its first hardware product – Spectacles, a pair of sunglasses which will go on sale in the US for $130. The glasses will come complete with an embedded camera that captures 10 second point-of-view video clips – all at the tap of a button.
Snapchat claims that the aim of the glasses is to break free from just the use of the smart phone by giving the ability to record circular footage from a first-person vantage point, more like reliving a memory.
Co-founder CEO Evan Spiegel said, “It's one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it's another thing to have an experience of the experience." He added “It was the closest I'd ever come to feeling like I was there again."
Even though the launch of the glasses is common knowledge, little is known about them in detail. Snippets of knowledge include that the glasses achieve footage which is similar to human vision by using a 115 degree-angle lens but it is even unclear if the glasses feature two lenses. It is expected that a button will sit on the left side close to the hinge which is used to start the recording process whilst wirelessly transmitting the 10 second clips to a host smart phone for the images to be shared.
It is thought that Spiegel is viewing the glasses as more as a lark rather than a major revenue driver with users opting to use them for fun at a family party or at an event such as a concert.
It will be interesting to see the take up and how just how good the glasses will be.
