Risks of mobile phone usage and exposure to radiation – not all bad news
Recent advice by one of the authors of the two new preliminary US Government studies by the National Toxicology Programme (NTP) is to use common sense precautions and ensure that kids have safe mobile phone habits.
The study included the review of the long-term effects of exposure to mobile phone radiation. This type of radiation is non-ionising and also found in microwave ovens.
Dr John Bucher, the senior scientist with NTP said “If there is a risk it is small”. These studies are really important to us all as the greatest human exposure to this type of radiation comes from mobile phones.
A paper recently published by the National Cancer Institute – ‘Cellphone and Cancer Risk’ stated that “There is currently no consistent evidence that non-ionising radiation increases cancer risk,”
Results from the two NTP studies monitored the effects exposure to radio frequency radiation (RFR) on rats and mice with some being exposure to RFR and some not. The results found that the health of both groups remained similar with some who were exposed actually living longer than some of these that were not exposed.
Mr Bucher added that there were also findings that “were concerning to us – some evidence of carcinogen activity”. His conclusion was that there is some potential cellphone radiation “under high exposure conditions”.
He added that there were ways to simply reduce exposure, something that he practices himself, for example, he suggested “don’t jam the phone against your ear. Keeping it away “dramatically reduces your radiation exposure. Cellphone radiation diminishes dramatically with distance.” It has also been recommended to sleep with your phone some distance away from you.
