In 2005, Sebastian Thrun and team Stanford Racing won the DARPA Grand Challenge. In cooperation with the Volkswagen Electronics Research Laboratory, they created 'Stanley', the first driverless car. After this win, Google allowed him to pursuit his project in founding the Google self-driving car project.
The car works with a laser which allows the vehicle to generate a detailed 3D map of its environment. The car then takes these generated maps and combines them with high-resolution maps of the world, producing different types of data models that allow it to drive itself. Six Toyota Prius, an Audi TT and three Lexus RX450h are equipped of its technology. Only 4 states in United States authorised driverless car: California, Nevada, Michigan and Florida. 23 Google self-driving cars have been involved in accidents and some of these accidents have caused by a human intervention.
