Facebook completes first drone flightabove the UK.
Facebook have created a solar panel drone, called the Anquila drone. The drone has the wingspan of a Boeing 737, but is still light weight. It is made out of cured carbon fibre that's stronger than steel.
During the day the drone will fly at 90,000 feet to soak up the sun's rays, then at night drop to 60,000 feet, and use gravitational potential energy to be more efficient. As it is solar powered it means each flight lasts upwards of 90 days.
The drone was developed by a Somerset-based company called Ascenta which Facebook bought last march.
The drone was designed so it could beam down laser-guided internet signals to those below.
Facebook says the drone will bring online connectivity to remote locations, previously inaccessible. The drone is part of the Internet.org scheme to get the entire world online.
Here is what Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page
“Today, I'm excited to share that we've successfully completed our first test flight of these aircraft in the UK,"
“Aircraft like these will help connect the whole world because they can affordably serve the 10 per cent of the world's population that live in remote communities without existing internet infrastructure."
