January has been hailed as the "biggest month ever" for BBC iPlayer, the broadcaster said its on-demand and live streaming service received 315 million TV and radio requests, breaking the 300 million barrier for the first time.

This worked out an average of 10.2 million requests per day, which is the highest figure ever recorded.

Sherlock proved the most popular series with two episodes of the show receiving over three million views.

It's first episode - The Empty Hearse - was watched 3.6 million times, making it the third most requested programme in the history of iPlayer - only Top Gear and the Olympic opening ceremony have been watched more.

Episodes of programmes such as The Voice, Eastenders, Waterloo Road and The Musketeers received in excess of one million views last month.

The BBC said use of iPlayer usually coincides with traditional TV watching times, although there is noticeably more daytime and late-night traffic.
